Art of Inlay

A breathtaking Technique.

Always striving to find harmony between opposing elements, Boghossian magnificently succeeds in blending tradition and innovation with their audacious revival of the « Art of Inlay ».

It has taken many years for Boghossian to master the knowledge and expertise of this extremely rare and unique art form. Inlay art is an ancient decorative technique, finding its earliest origins in the Egyptian Empire and in the treasures of the Pharaohs. It is created by inserting contrasting materials, such as stones, wood and metals, into a base object to form patterns and pictures.

The technique attained perfection in the 17th Century, during the Mughal Empire. The most impressive achievement of this thriving period for inlay art is the Taj Mahal, often referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. This enchanting place is an essential source of inspiration for Boghossian. The House has reinterpreted the floral patterns of the architecture, the rich decorative motifs and vibrant mosaics into a breathtaking European aesthetic.

Inlay art in jewellery is an intricate and delicate work that demands exceptional know-how and precision. The base stone is meticulously carved and shaped before a precious gem is delicately set into it. The marriage of the two stones creates thrilling yet balanced contrasts. The gems freely reveal their hues and brilliance as almost no metal holds them together. This entrancing play between the reflecting colours gives an illusion of weightlessness.

Boghossian’s « Art of Inlay » technique is beautifully illustrated by its divine Mughal-inspired bracelet. In this masterful creation, which has taken more than eight months to achieve, Colombian emeralds are inlaid into precious mother of pearl, hand-carved into floral designs.

With the pioneering decision to make « Art of Inlay » their signature style, Boghossian introduces an intricate and truly challenging technique, demonstrating the innovative and audacious nature of the House.
